Here are two fine steam action programs featuring famed ex-Reading T-1 Class 4-8-4 2102, along with Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 759. In 1985, the big Northern returned to main line excursion service.

RETURN OF THE RAMBLES covers excursions from Reading to Harrisburg, PA and also to Jim Thorpe. You’ll see the 2102 performing high-speed runbys at a variety of interesting and photogenic locations. An interesting sequence depicts the big 4-8-4 crawling through the PB&NE yard in Bethlehem, along with night views of the locomotive at the Reading Shops and a meeting with ex-CP 4-6-0 972 at Jim Thorpe. As a special bonus, coverage of legendary Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 Berkshire 759 on a Buffalo-Corning, NY fantrip is also presented. Exciting trackside and pacing sequences combine for a memorable vignette of the 759 in action!

THE SCHUYLKILL SHIFTER depicts the 2102, now operated by the Blue Mountain & Reading Railroad, in special coal train service in April 1991. Beginning with a short history of the Reading T-1 Class, the program offers a brief overview of the 2102’s excursion career, from the famed Reading Rambles of the early 1960s to her purchase by the BM&R. Host Jim Boyd then follows the 2102 as she hauls coal over the former Reading main line – the first time a Reading T-1 has pulled a coal train on home rails since steam was retired! Three camera crews covered all the action. The 2102’s authentic Reading “hooter” freight whistle will send chills down your spine as you watch this powerful 4-8-4 re-create 1950s steam railroading!
