The three-volume RAILROADS IN WARTIME SERIES features an entertaining variety of classic films produced during World War II and the Korean War to showcase the importance of American Railroads. All programs are narrated.
VOLUME I includes the rare government film Troop Train, featuring armored vehicles, tanks, motorcyles, and army personnel aboard a special train. New York Central, Southern Ry., and SP steam locomotives are shown. Lifeline of the Nation shows war materiel moved from coast to coast on the Santa Fe, NYC, MoPac, Burlington, SP, and C&O.
VOLUME II offers Railroads and National Defense, produced during the Korean War and includes memorable scenes of Milwaukee Road 4-8-4s and Erie-built diesels, Burlington FTs, Great Northern steam power, plus Rio Grande, Kay, and Seaboard diesels, along with future fantripper T&P 2-10-4 610. A featurette describing the making of The Train, and two very rare Lionel train TV commercials, are also included.
VOLUME III presents the classic Santa Fe World War II film Loaded for War. Opening with a montage of steam and diesel action, the film next describes the construction of ships and tanks and the movement of war supplies to points of embarkation. The rebuilding of 2-8-2 3723 from a rusting “old slobberbucket” into a virtually new locomotive is a highlight, along with double- and triple-headed steam runbys. E1 and FT diesels are also shown. A featurette on the making of the famous war movie Von Ryan’s Express concludes this fine program!
