This program presents vignettes of several large traction properties in the Chicago and Milwaukee areas. They include the Chicago Surface Lines; the Chicago ?L? operated by the Chicago Transit Authority; the Chicago North Shore & Milwaukee (North Shore Line); and The Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light Company (TMERL). Highlights include:
? TMERL: With over 400 miles of track, this was one of the largest systems in the Midwest. Following the Great Depression, the TMERL began to contract, resulting in a number of line closings. Seen here is the last run over the Port Washington interurban line, filmed on March 28, 1948. This black-and-white sequence has extensive trackside and onboard coverage of the last-day activities.
? Chicago Surface Lines and Chicago ?L?: High-quality 16mm film footage by Sid Silleck offers views of streetcars, elevated trains, and even North Shore Line trains at a variety of interesting locations.
? North Shore Line: more fine color 16mm film footage by Bob Stillman shows NSL trains in exciting action sequences on both the Shore Line and Skokie Valley routes, including a number of scenes with full snow cover.
