THIRD AVENUE RAILWAY SYSTEM, VOL. 3 - Nostalgic Trolley Tour 13 (VHS)
SKU: T13
Encompassing about 400 miles of track and some 1,500 trolleys, the Third Avenue made it possible to ride trolleys all the way from the Battery in lower Manhattan to the northern boundary of Westchester County. From Times Square to rural Yonkers routes, this huge system provided an endless variety of scenery and rolling stock for ordinary travellers and trolley enthusiasts alike. This fine three-part series offers a nostalgic look at one of the most interesting street railway systems in the eastern U.S. Manhattan lines were abandoned in June, 1947, while the last Yonkers trolleys ran on November 9, 1952.
Volume III features lines in eastern Westchester County. You'll see extensive coverage of Routes 7 - Yonkers Avenue, A - 241st Street-New Rochelle and B - 229th Street-Mount Vernon. A variety of action scenes in downtown New Rochelle is a highlight, and there is coverage of snow sweepers in action and the final day of operations in Yonkers. Scenes at the vast Mt. Vernon shops are included, along with poignant views of trolleys being towed to the yard where they were scrapped, stripped for parts and burned.
